NAVAL TERMINOLOGIES

Astern - Behind the stern, or if moving astern—going backwards. The advice to an officer that he or she is going astern means that his or her shoulder rank straps have been (incorrectly) reversed. The phrase astern of station can also be used to describe a programme that is running behind time, as well as that is to the rear of its correct position.

Cabin - Sleeping accomodation provided in ships officers, and seniors ratings. Single cabins are provided for more important people and cabins seldom have more than 6 bunks.

Coxswain / Cox’n - The rating incharge of a ship’s boat and responsible for its safety. He is also responsible in helping the ship’s XO with the overall safety of his ships.
